South Africa-Australia
Minerals Sector Scholarship Fund
Australasian Institute of
Mining and Metallurgy and several Australian and South African companies
in the sector have established a fund to provide scholarships for
Australian and South African resident students and junior professionals to
carry out honours level project work of particular relevance to the
minerals sector. South African students and junior professionals must
undertake their project in Australia at or under
supervision of the Australian National University (ANU), but may be
located at the laboratory or site of another entity, such as a mining
company or research institute. It is anticipated the successful
candidate will spend 8 to 12 weeks in Australia
on the research project and travelling and visiting mines, geological
sites, professionals and academics to broaden experience in both academic
discipline and culturally. The selection criteria are merit and relevance
of the project, potential of the applicant to be a good communicator and a
good young ambassador for their country and university, academic ability,
interest in and enthusiasm for a successful career in the minerals sector
or directly facilitates others to do so. The scholarship is for a fixed sum
and to cover living expenses while carrying out project work overseas. The
fixed sum is set at A$5000 and may be increased at the discretion of the
Coordinator taking note of increases in cost of living and balance of
moneys in the Fund. The Fund
will not provide additional funds for travel costs to/from Australia/South
Africa, but may be able assist successful applicants in securing
assistance to cover the cost of the airfare. One scholarship will be awarded
each year to a South African. If there is no suitable candidate an
additional scholarship may be awarded in the following year. Initial enquiries can be made to
Peter Hancock, AusIMM South Africa-Australia Scholarship Coordinator,

Winner of iPOD
competition
We’re pleased to announce the
first winner of the iPOD competition is Ayesha Ismail from Johannesburg. Ayesha is a fourth year medical
student at the University of the Witwatersrand and attended the Study in
Australia exhibition at
Roedean School. Ayesha has done quite a bit of
research about Australian universities as she is hoping to transfer from
Wits to study in Australia in about 12 months
time. She believes Australia universities offer
good quality education in addition to multicultural campus communities.
She’s thinking of using her new iPOD to record university lectures! If you are registered on our
website, you still have two more chances to win an iPODs so stay tuned to
Austudy-Africa.com! Alternatively, if not,
you can register on www.austudy-africa.com.
